March Break ‘Menu’ at Schneider Haus:
Kitchen Science is taking over! Join us at Schneider Haus as we combine food and science to explore the wonders of chemistry, biology, and physics! Meet our special guests, the Worm Wrangler, UW Science Quest, and University of Waterloo Engineering who will be sharing their expertise with us! While you’re here, don’t forget to check out our new Kids Discovery Space, specially curated for tiny hands and big imaginations. Open from 11 am to 4 pm daily during March Break!
What can you expect this March Break day by day?
Saturday, March 9
Kick off March Break with us at Schneider Haus by exploring Kitchen Science - create homemade Gummy Bears and edible water bottles. Ever wonder what DNA looks like? Get up close and personal with DNA and learn to extract it from fruit for closer analysis. Who doesn’t love a chemical reaction? Finish off your trip with a bang, join us outdoors to attempt your very own snow volcano!
Sunday, March 10
Science and food go together like bread and butter! Join us in our kitchen lab to explore the science behind how bread and butter are made. Looking for something with a little more zing? See if you can create your own circuit powered by fruit! You may have heard of ice fishing, but have you ever fished for ice? Learn about how you can harness the power of salt to catch ice cubes in our outdoor ice fishing experiment!
Monday, March 11
We have some other sweet activities in store that are sure to make your day! Learn how to harness the power of cold to craft up your very own ice cream, or get messy with us in our slime lab where you can personalize your very own slime to take home!
Tuesday, March 12
What’s on the menu today at Schneider Haus? Join us in our kitchen lab to get up close and personal with DNA by extracting it from fruit, attempt to create your own edible water bottle bubble, and watch kitchen science come alive as we discuss the science behind living sourdough starters!
Wednesday, March 13
"It's a total eclipse of the heart!” when we team up with the University of Waterloo scientists to learn all about solar eclipses! On Monday April 8, we will experience a total solar eclipse as the moon's shadow crosses earth. Explore activities to discover why solar eclipses happen, what we can expect, and how you can protect your eyes while viewing this incredible experience. Each participant will get one free pair of eclipse viewing glasses so they can be prepared to witness the magic of solar science on April 8th! Don't miss out on this amazing learning opportunity - you won't get another chance to view a total solar eclipse until 2044! Included with admission, 1 to 4 p.m. While you're here explore things sweet and sour, with Fibonacci Lemonade, and the electric world of fruit circuits!
Thursday, March 14
No whey, Schneider Haus is back with another day of awesome kitchen science! Join us today to learn about the science of dairy, from curds and whey to delectable butter, we are hungry for answers! Join us in our new Discovery Space for some messy sensory play as we explore the non-newtonian fluid Oobleck! Is it a liquid, a solid, or both? It’s up to you to decide!
Friday, March 15
Engineers and food may seem like unlikely friends, but they’re closer than you think! Join students from the University of Waterloo Engineering department onsite from 1 pm to 4 pm. While you’re here, explore the lively world of bread science and discover what makes loaves rise. What do all living beings have in common, including plants? DNA! Extract DNA from fruit and investigate why it's found in all living beings!
Saturday, March 16
Sticky, slimy, and sweet! All things you can find on the menu at Schneider Haus today! Join us to discover the science behind slimy chia seeds and make your own eco friendly slime! Explore the sweet science of making ice cream and learn how you can make your own using ingredients and materials you have in your kitchen! Stick with us and you’ll learn all about how to harness the power of sticky fruit to make your very own circuit.
Sunday, March 17
It’s the final day of our March Break programming, but we still have lots of kitchen science for you to explore! Try making your very own yummy gummy bears, learn about layered Fibonacci Lemonade that gets sweeter as you drink it, and join us in our lab to test if you have what it takes to make a colour shifting slime that reacts to temperature changes! Finish off your March Break by causing a St. Patrick’s day volcano, a snow volcano that is! Learn the science behind baking soda and vinegar volcanoes, and create your own chemical reaction that’s fun for all ages.
